After providing a brief overview of cosmopolitanism and the various principles that provide a value framework for aesthetic cosmopolitanism, I will present a specific example of art perceived as ‘exotic’ from the point of view a particular appreciator: a piece of contemporary Mauritanian music, heard from the perspective of a listener unfamiliar with this particular tradition. Cosmopolitanism is the thesis that there are certain universal values and transboundary or global responsibilities toward human beings anywhere. Localism is the thesis that local knowledge, local traditions, and local understandings of what is good for people are important to understanding and promoting well-being in any given locality. Cosmopolitanism, to cosmopolitans, is not a mere political ideology like any other, but the moral destiny of the world. Its opponents, here labelled communitarians, are viewed therefore not merely as rational supporters of an alternative political or economic system, but instead as dangerous relics of an oppressive past to be crushed, just as liberalism crushed the remnants of the feudal order. What does cosmopolitanism mean? The idea that all of humanity belongs to a single moral community.
